On Friday, a blog I love posted a piece I wrote about returning to work after maternity leave. The piece has been shared over 10,000 times and has over 5,000 likes on Facebook. There were some pretty awful comments but obviously some people read it fully and related.

The comments slammed me for leaving at 5 (clearly I wouldn’t leave if I had a meeting.) They slammed me for signing back on at 7:30 (they said I am promoting a workaholic society). They slammed me for working at a place like a spa (I work at a small desk in Torrance but to be honest it felt like a spa my first few days back). They slammed me for having hired help while I work at home (I cannot possibly do my job and take care of the baby at the same time). They slammed me for feeling refreshed at my job (I actually do).

I’m lucky enough to work at a place that has been very, very supportive. My coworkers have been great. I worked the first two weekends I was back because I had a project and a deadline. I didn’t write that in the article because that’s no different than how I worked before – but leaving early to try to see my kid is.

We’re all just trying to find our way through life’s changes. This Thanksgiving week, I’m thankful I have a beautiful baby, an amazing husband, supportive coworkers and a career I enjoy enough to make some hard decisions for.
